308 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine B y the seventh grade, John Michael Quinn became increasingly fascinated with algebra and trigonometry, and in the ninth grade, he was forever moved by French physicist Andre Lichnerwicz’ book “Relativity,” leading him to a career in science. Mr. Quinn received a BS in physics from the University of Virginia in 1968 and an MS in physics from the University of Colorado in 1982. He also served with the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1971. Since 2010, he has been the owner and consultant of Solar Terrestrial Environmental Research Institute LLC. Today, Mr. Quinn’s achievements include the development of official Department of Defense world magnetic models, which are used by military and civilian agencies for navigational purposes, basic research of earth’s magnetic field, and specialized remote geomagnetic sensing/modeling techniques to detect lithosphere magnetization due to meteorite impact shocks and hotspot basalt flows. With his current research focusing on classical unified field theory, Mr. Quinn has been immensely influential in global change research. Looking back on his career, Mr. Quinn is most proud of working on practical research such as magnetic fields models that go in aircraft navigational systems and satellite orientation systems. Prior to his retirement in 2002, Mr. Quinn was a research geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Denver beginning in 1995. He spent 1974 to 1985 with the U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office at the Mississippi Stennis Space Center as a geophysicist and mathematician, and was a research physicist for the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C., from 1967 to 1973 and again from 1979 to 1980. He was also a principal engineer for Singer Simulation Products from 1973 to 1974. Mr. Quinn is a member of the American Geophysical Union, European Geophysical Society andMathematics Association of America.
