320 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine WILLIAM A. DONOVAN PUBLIC SERVICE LIBRARIAN (RETIRED) Chicago Public Library Port Charlotte, FL Ennis and Leon Carnovsky at the University of Chicago. He also credits his father, who was a veteran of the U.S. Army Tank Corps in World War I in France, and his mother who taught him solid human values. Mr. Donovan is a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Beta Phi Mu, the Knights of Columbus and Couples for Christ. A dedicated man of his faith, Mr. Donovan is certified catechist at St. Charles Borromeo Church within the Diocese of Venice, Florida. At his parish, he was named Volunteer of the Month and has been a Sunday school teacher for many years. In charity, he has sponsored children in both the ChildFund and Unbound organizations for more than one decade. In his free time, Mr. Donovan enjoys music, as well as collecting baseball cards and postal items. Notably, Mr. Donovan also appears in six editions of Who’s Who in America, five editions of Who’s Who in the World and the 23rd edition of Who’s Who in the Midwest. W hile in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1961, William A. Donovan and a good friend discussed the possibility of opening a bookstore with a coffee area, and how they could make it unique. As an avid reader, Mr. Donovan was excited by the prospect of working with books; therefore, he began the process of becoming a librarian. In 1958, he received a BA from St. John Fisher College, and in 1981 he attended the Graduate Library School. Following formal study, Mr. Donovan spent almost 30 years, between 1962 and 1993, as a librarian at the Chicago Public Library. In addition to his librarian career, he contributed articles and book reviews to professional journals. Alongside his endeavors, Mr. Donovan tried his talent as a cartoon gag writer, and took the Hollywood School of Comedy Writing Course in order to improve his skills as writer. Looking back on his career, Mr. Donovan believes he owes much of his success to his mentors, including Professor Ross H.
