Van Rensalier made it her mission to search for her roots. Now a research genealogist of more than 55 years and member of the National Council of Negro Women, Ms. Van Rensalier is the president and founder of Huntoon-Van Rensalier Underground Railroad Foundation. Notably, in 2014, she led the board to fund and build a prestigious monument on the site, where she discovered her great-grandfather was an abolitionist. The monument features 161 personalized bricks, fortifying the abolitionist legacy of transcending race. Backed by a BA in English from California State University, Long Beach from 1976, in Ms. Van Rensalier’s career she has been an analyst/project leader for the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, City of Los Angeles Community Development Department, Watts Labor Community Action Committee and a rehabilitation counselor for the New Jersey State Council for the Blind.
