46 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine G ladys Rice Washburn began her professional career by age 15. The photographer for a small magazine, Penthouse and Terrace, she worked after school hours. Her father and sister were also photographers. At the age of 12, she had a professional camera and won top awards at a photo competition. While still in her teens, one of her photographs was included in an exhibit at the Baltimore Museum of Art. In 1944, Ms. Washburn graduated from a high school art program and was immediately hired by Conde Nast Publications to do photography for its various magazines. She began freelancing from her father’s studio in 1948, handling a variety of assignments. When her father retired, she took over management of the studio. In 1955, Ms. Washburn’s work was featured at Anne DeCarava’s A Photographer’s Gallery in Manhattan. Her first solo exhibit at the Hunter Arts Gallery was multimedia and included sculpture and film. Two other multimedia exhibits followed at the Lexington House Gallery and Gallery One. Her first solo exhibit at the Hunter Arts Gallery was multimedia and included photography, sculpture and film. By 1960, Ms. Washburn was doing cinematography and picture editing for film producers, and she began making her own films. She is most proud of her film short, “The Swing,” for which she was cinematographer, picture editor and producer. The film won CINE’s Golden Eagle Award, was well received at movie houses and collections, and was shown at the Museum of Modern Art. Ms. Washburn received a BS in communication arts, summa cum laude, from the City University of NewYork in 1978. In 1981, she received anMA in English education from New York University. She taught writing as an adjunct instructor at CUNY, and from 1985 to 2002, taught writing and commu- nication arts at the Borough of Manhattan Commu- nity College. As the president of Washburn Films from 1972 to 1981, she distributed ethnographic films to educational institutions. While retired, Ms. Washburn has published three books and completed a memoir, “AWild Parade,” in 2020.
