Lewis Thigpen received a BS in mechanical engineering from Howard University in 1964, and an MS in 1967 and a PhD in 1970, both from the Illinois Institute of Technology. Now a professional engineer, his notable achievements include a patent in his field and pioneering research in earth penetrating projectiles, constitutive modeling of geologic materials, web transport analysis and theoretical seismology. For over 16 years, Dr. Thigpen was a professor and chairman of mechanical engineering, and in 2008, he was named professor emeritus. Previously, he was a physicist and group leader at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, an assistant professor of civil engineering at the Lowell Technological Institute and a technical staff member at Sandia National Laboratories. Dr. Thigpen is a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and a member of the American Society of Engineering Education and Sigma Xi. Additionally, he served in the U.S. Army in the United States and West Germany from 1955 to 1958. Despite his numerous awards, a highlight of Dr. Thigpen’s career was being the first African American to chair the National American Society of Mechanical Engineers Department Heads Committee. LEWIS THIGPEN SENIOR COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEMS ENGINEER (RETIRED), AUTHOR La Plata, MD L ewis F. McIntyre received a BS in aeronautical engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy and an MS in aeronautical engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School. He served as an airborne communications officer and mission commander for the U.S. Navy in Guam and Patuxent River, as well as an airborne operational test director in the 1980s. Notably, he performed the first-ever operational test of an aircraft hardened against electromagnetic pulse effects. Mr. McIntyre most recently served as a senior communications systems engineer at Science Applications International Corporation. Turning to writing thereafter, Mr. McIntyre authored “Come, Follow Me: A Story of Pilate and Jesus,” “The Eagle and the Dragon: A Novel of Rome and China” and “True Believers: The Founding Fathers of TACAMO.” He was the recipient of the Pinnacle Book Achievement Award from the North American Book Exchange and won Book of the Year from the Maryland Writers Association. Mr. McIntyre is a member of the American Association of Physics Teachers, National Rifle Association and U.S. Naval Institute.
