83 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine C arolyn J. Else received a BA in psychology from Stanford University in 1956, but she could not envision a future for herself in the field. Choosing to pursue what she was truly passionate in, Ms. Else obtained a Master of Library Science from the University of Washington in 1957. A certified professional librarian in the State of Washington, Ms. Else kicked off her career in New York City as a librarian for the Queens Borough Public Library from 1957 to 1959. For three years, she went international with the U.S. Army Special Services as a librarian in France and Germany before spending 1962 as an information librarian at Bennett Martin Library in Lincoln, Nebraska. Finally settling down in the Tacoma, Washington, area in the early 1960s, Ms. Else became a dedicated branch librarian and director for the Pierce County Library District until her retirement in 1994. A highlight of Ms. Else’s career was when she became director of the Pierce County Library District; the library was funded $3 million to expand the facility. Ms. Else played a major role in making those renovation decisions, and the library became a brand new establishment, which felt like home. Ms. Else is a member of the Pacific Northwest Library Association, Washington Library Association, American Library Association, Rotary International, Tacoma Rotary Eight Club and the Condominium Association of Tacoma. She was previously a member of the Greater Tacoma Community Foundation’s Distribution Committee, South Puget Sound Higher Education Council and Washington State Local Governance Study Committee. Additionally, Ms. Else was a wellness consultant for Nikken, Inc., in 1994, and previously sat on the board of directors for the Tacoma Philharmonic, Community Health Care and Campfire of Tacoma, as well as the advancement committee for Tacoma Community College. Like any exceptional librarian, Ms. Else enjoys reading in her free time. She also loves to travel and spend time with her two children. Millennium Magazine Featured Listee CAROLYN J.
