102 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine T eaching at nearly every educational level for more than 40 years, James R. McLeod is a renowned educator backed by numerous accolades. He is the recipient of the Directors Special Award and the Outstanding Undergraduate Professor Award, as well as named the 2006 Undergraduate Instructor of the Year from Chapman University. Additionally, he was recognized for outstanding contributions to North Idaho College in 1990. Mr. McLeod received a BA in English from the University of Washington in 1966 and an MA in English from Eastern Washington University in 1969 as an “outstanding graduate.” He commenced his career working as a psychiatric group worker for Ryther Child Center in Seattle from 1961 to 1963. He returned to teaching in 1966 at Central Valley School District in Spokane, Washington. By 1970, Mr. McLeod settled on teaching at the collegiate level and served as an associate professor of English at North Idaho College until 2001 – he also taught periodically for Lewis-Clark State College and the University of Idaho. He was North Idaho College’s director of Creative Writing and the Scottish Studies Program. In the final years of his career, Mr. McLeod was an associate professor of English at Chapman University in Oak Harbor, also known as Brandman University, from 2002 to 2008. An honored author by the Washington State Arts Commission and Idaho State Library, Mr. McLeod’s 1970s and 1980s works include “Theodore Roethke: A Manuscript Checklist,” “Theodore Roethke: A Bibliography” and “Mysterious Lake Pend Oreille and Its Monster.” Most recently, in 2015, he published “Making the Arrows: Poems,” and his poetry has also been featured in the anthology “Deep Down Things: An Anthology of Inland Northwest Poetry.” Mr. McLeod credits the poets Theodore Roethke, Nelson Bentley and Richard Hugo for their influence. Mr. McLeod is proud to have helped educate Navy personnel at Chapman University who were working to finish their bachelor’s degrees before they left the military.
