Janet Myhre is a renowned statistician based in Claremont, California, with achievements influencing the course of modern defense and safety assessments. Dr. Myhre received a BA from Pacific Lutheran University in 1954 and an MA from the University of Washington in 1956. In 1968, she achieved a PhD in mathematical statistics from the University of Stockholm in Sweden. For more than 40 years between 1962 and 2008, Dr. Myhre served as a professor of mathematics at Claremont McKenna College. During her years in this role, her achievements include contributing to the development of models and statistical theory used since 1972 for reliability assessments, and developing a software and statistical theory for safety and risk assessment. Additionally, Dr. Myhre was a consultant to the Environmental Protection Agency in the late 1970s. She served as the director of the Reed Institute for Decision Science at Claremont McKenna College from 1975 to 2008 and has also been the founder and president of the Mathematical Analysis Research Corporation since 1973. A visiting professor at Washington State University in 1978, in Dr. Myhre’s early years, she held positions at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and University of Stockholm. For her unmatched success in statistics, Dr. Myhre has been the recipient of numerous awards, including recognition as an honorary alumna at Claremont McKenna College in 1996. In 1984, she received the Austin Bonis Award from the American Society of Quality Control, and the U.S. Navy granted her their Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Myhre is a fellow of American Statistical Association, for which she was associate editor of Technometrics from 1969 to 1975, council representative from 2001 to 2003, and president of the Southern California chapter from 2003 to 2005. She is also a member of the Claremont Museum of Art and Phi Beta Kappa, where she served as president of the Claremont McKenna College chapter from 2004 to 2007.
