31 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine W atching his father excel as a piano player, composer and arranger, Maurice “Bugs” Bower has been influenced by music since his early years in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and aspired to be like the famous trumpeter Harry James. Upon meeting his friend Joe Meredith and expressing his interest of studying music in New York City, Mr. Meredith offered the young Mr. Bower a place to live while in pursuit of his studies. Mr. Bower took courses at the Julliard School of Music and now holds an honorary MusD from Five Towns College in Dix Hills, New York, where he also taught for 10 years. Today, Mr. Bower serves as a record company president, producer, composer, arranger and teacher. He has produced close to 100 albums since commencing his career in music and is known for producing Dorian Dammer’s album, “Aerobics Exercise,” the first of its kind. Notably, he has recorded with artists such as Bing Crosby, Perry Como, Kool and the Gang, Joe Pesci, Brian Hyland, Steve Allen, Wayne Newton, The Beatles and Cab Calloway, among other musicians. Throughout his career, Mr. Bower has produced numerous albums, including Kool and the Gang’s “Funky Stuff,” “Hollywood Swinging,” “Jungle Boogie” and “Celebration.” He also produced Brian Hyland’s “Itsy-Bitsy-Yellow Polka Dot Bikini,” Andy Williams’ “Walk Hand in Hand with Me,” Sammy Kaye’s “The Mission of St. Augustine,” Joanie Greggains’ “Aerobic Shape Up” and The Border Brass’ “Tijuana Christmas.” Additionally, he is the author of more than 30 music books, including “Play with a Pro” and “Nice Stories about Nice People.” Mr. Bower is the recipient of two Grammy Awards, Best Children’s Recording of the Year for “The Little Prince” and Best Spoken Word Recording of the Year for “Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Home Computers.” He also holds 10 Gold Record Million Seller Awards and the Paul Harris Fellow Award from Rotary International. From his years serving in World War II with the U.S. Army, he was granted a U.S. Holocaust Memorial Consul Award for Opening Camp Ohrdruf, Germany, and is listed on the Nassau County Veteran’s Wall of Honor.
