62 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine H aving built a career in several areas, Mary Devon O’Brien said she would have never predicted the outcome of her career. After receiving a BA in 1975 and an MBA in 1976, both from Rutgers University, she commenced her nearly 20-year tenure with ITT Defense Communications and Avionics Divisions in 1977. Since 1995, Ms. O’Brien has served as president of Anamex, Inc., and as commissioner of the Essex County Tax Board since 2008. Since 2018, she has also served the Tax Board as president. Ms. O’Brien has become a respected voice in her community, having built a prominent civic presence. She currently serves as the president of the Maplewood Civic Association and is chair of the Maplewood Republican County Committee, Maple Leaf Service Award Committee, United Way of Essex’s Leadership Division, President Interaction Committee and Oranges, Performance Management Committee and Maplewood Homelessness’ Community Service Council. Alongside her various other community projects and responsibilities, Ms. O’Brien is chair of the board of trustees for the South Mountain Counseling Center, on the board of trustees for the United Way of Essex and West Hudson, and on the board of directors for Governing Institute of New Jersey and the Performance Management Association. Of her numerous awards and recognitions, Ms. O’Brien was the recent recipient of the Maplewood New Jersey Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Service Award in 2005. The author of “Voices” from 1982 and “Pace: SystemManual” from 1979, Ms. O’Brien attributes her success to her parents, who worked hard and earned doctorate degrees, teaching her the importance of dedication and serving your community. Ms. O’Brien’s advice to those in the process of building their careers is to keep an open mind and take advantage of the opportunities that may come your way. Ms. O’Brien is a member of Lions Club International, National Association for Female Executives, International PlatformAssociation, Telecommunications Group and Aerospace Industries Association, Women’s Career Network, National Security Industrial Association, Association for Information and Image Management, Labor and Employment Relations Association, ITT Management Association, Rutgers Business School Alumni Association and the League of Women Voters.
