78 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine T he senior executive and chairman of the International University Project with Sylvan Learning Systems in Washington, D.C., since 1999, Dr. Joseph D. Duffey has had an illustrious career in education and government. Prior to his current roles, he was director of the U.S. Information Agency from 1993 to 1998 and president of American University and the University of Massachusetts, where he has also been chancellor. Additionally, he is a past chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Dr. Duffey commenced his career in 1965 as associate professor and director of the Center for Urban Studies at Hartford Seminary. In 1971, he was a fellow of the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, as well as an adjunct professor and fellow of the Calhoun College at Yale University from 1971 to 1973. He went on to serve as an executive officer of the American As- sociation of University Professors before spending 1977 as assistant secretary for educational and cultural affairs with the U.S. Department of State. A member of the Council on Foreign Relations and Cosmos Club, Dr. Duffey is the recipient of the 1997 Tree of Life Award from the National Jewish Fund and was a Rockefeller Foundation Scholar. Notably, he was named Commander of the Order of the Crown by the King of Belgium and served as senior presidential appointee under former Presidents Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton. Raised in West Virginia, Dr. Duffey was eagerly ambitious to pursue school. He received a BA from Marshall University, BD from the Andover Newton Theological School, and STM from Yale University. He also achieved a PhD from the Hartford Seminary and earned an honorary LittD from Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto, Japan. Dr. Duffey holds seven LittD degrees from such universities as Monmouth College, Dickinson College, Gonzaga University, Centre College, Adelphi University, Alderson Broaddus University and the City College of New York. He also has three LLD degrees from Austin College, Bethany College and Amherst College, as well as two LHD degrees from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and the City University of New York.
