Ms. Haig commenced her career in education in 1970 with the Northborough School Department in Massachusetts as an elementary teacher, where she was certified for kindergarten through the 12th grade, as well as a K-12 mathematics coordinating team chair. Outside from her direct teaching, in 1988 she was a CHIME advocate for the National Association of Teachers of Mathematics in Reston, Virginia. After 35 years in teaching, Ms. Haig formally retired from her role as a fourth grade teacher in 2005. Currently serving as a consultant, since 1987, Ms. Haig has worked with the mathematics advisory committee for the Department of Education in Malden, Massachusetts. For her unmatched success and commitment to her work, she was the recipient of the 1983 Anna Seaver Teacher of the Year Award from the Northborough School Department. She also took home the 1989 Award for Heroism from the National Safety Council. Ms. Haig thanks her father, Harry Michael, for being the mentor who motivated and inspired her throughout her life. One of Ms. Haig’s greatest goals while advocating for students and better teaching was to put an emphasis on mathematics in elementary schools. She felt that reading was always a top priority, when mathematics is just as valuable in early education. Ms. Haig is especially proud to have implemented a mathematics night for parents, where they completed coursework with their children. Ms. Haig is a member of the National Education Association, Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, and Massachusetts Teachers Association. Over the years, she has found seeing her students grow physically, educationally and professionally to be the most rewarding part of her career. In her free time, she enjoys skiing and boating. G rowing up, Barbara Haig had a deep appreciation for education, and spe- cifically mathematics, which was later the focus of her college thesis. She received a Bachelor of Science in educa- tion in 1970 and aMaster of Science in education in 1974, both from Framingham State University.
