216 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine W hen Dr. Ellen Jane Killebrew came down with a case of gastritis when she was 13 years old, a family doctor came to her home to conduct an examination. The doctor gave her a shot, almost immediately alleviating her pain. Since that moment, she too wanted to own her own “magic” bag of healing remedies. She is now a noteworthy cardiologist and educator backed by numerous awards. Most recently, in 2014, she received special recognition for Outstanding Contribution on Clinical Faculty at the University of California San Francisco’s School of Medicine. She has also taken home awards from the Permanente Medical Group, State Assembly of California and House Staff Association. Dr. Killebrew achieved a BS in biology from Bucknell University in 1959 and MD from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in 1965. By 1970, she completed an internship and residency at the University of Colorado, as well as a cardiology fellowship at the Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco. She is now board certified in cardiovascular disease and internal medicine, and is a strong advocate for women in science, as she was one of four women in her medical school graduating class. Since 1992, Dr. Killebrew has served as a clinical professor of medicine at UC San Francisco, and from 1998 to 2016, she was on the admissions panel for UC Berkeley’s Joint Medical Program. She joined the Kaiser Permanente in 1970 as a non- invasive cardiologist. She also joined the university medical center clinical faculty in 1973, where she started off as an assistant turned associate professor. She commenced her career in 1970 as director of coronary care at the Permanente Medical Group and also taught a coronary care course at Contra Costa College from 1973 to 1976. Dr. Killebrew was president of the American Heart Association’s East Bay chapter and a fellow of the American College of Physicians. She is also a member of the American College of Cardiology. Looking back on her career, she is most proud of meeting new patients and aiding them in getting back to a healthy lifestyle.
