He received a BA, with highest honors, from Harvard University in 1993 and an MD from Harvard Medical School in 1997, from whom he received the Linnane Prize. Since 2020, Dr. Kalkanis has served as chief executive officer of the Henry Ford Medical Group, where he provides strategic leadership over the 1,900-member group of physicians, and senior vice president and chief academic officer of Henry Ford Health System. Joining Henry Ford in 2004 as a neurosurgeon, he was named chair of Henry Ford’s Department of Neurosurgery in 2014 and is a medical director of the Henry Ford Cancer Institute. Dr. Kalkanis has conducted clinical trials and outcome studies for brain tumor patients, targeted cell-based therapy for the treatment of malignant gliomas, and worked with viral gene therapy and stem cell delivery for novel brain cancer therapies. An internationally recognized brain tumor expert, Dr. Kalkanis completed a residency at the Harvard-Massachusetts General Hospital program. He is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and president of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. He also serves as director of the American Board of Neurological Surgery. He is involved with the National Tumor Section Guidelines Committee, American Cancer Society, and Neurosurgical Foundation for the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. From 2008 to 2019, Dr. Kalkanis was voted one of Michigan’s Top Doctors by Hour Magazine and was selected as the national first place research award recipient by both the American College of Surgeons and Congress of Neurological Surgeons. He credits numerous mentors for being major influences on his life, including his mother Grace, Dr. Peter Black, Dr. Bob Carter of Massachusetts General Hospital, Dr. Reese Cosgrove, and Dr. Mark Rosenblum, the former chair at Henry Ford. A t the age of 14, Dr. Steven N. Kalkanis was inspired by the physicians who cared for his father before he tragically lost his battle with cancer.
