115 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine D r. Jacob “Jack” Schneps was in the 10th grade when World War II ended in 1945. Fascinated by the science behind the atomic bomb, Dr. Schneps began to read up on nuclear physics. Entranced by the subject, he wrote his senior paper on nuclear physics and atomic energy, garnering much praise from his teachers and giving him the final push to pursue a career in physics. Dr. Schneps received a BA from New York University in 1951, as well as an MA in 1953 and a PhD in 1956, both from the University of Wisconsin- Madison. Commencing his career in 1956, Dr. Schneps was a dedicated faculty member of Tufts University until his passing in 2019. In 2011, he was named Vannevar Bush Professor Emeritus after a more than 50-year career within the department of physics as an assistant, associate and full professor, as well as department chairman and Vannevar Bush Chair. Over his career, Dr. Schneps was also a visiting professor, scientist and scholar to Fermilab, the European Organization for Nuclear Research in Switzerland, The Technion in Israel, Harvard University, University College London, École Polytechnique, Paris Diderot University and Collège de France. The highlight of his career was during his final year at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, when he worked on a paper with Professor Fry, whom he called his greatest career influence, to find the first evidence of the K-Long Meson. Additionally, he made the first direct observation of the Tau-Neutrino. Dr. Schneps was a fellow of the American Physical Society and member of the American Association of University Professors, Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi. Additionally, he was a postdoctoral fellow of the National Science Foundation at the University of Padua in Italy from 1958 to 1959. Renowned for his written works and research, he was the editor of “Proceedings of Neutrino 88” in 1989, a contributing author to “Methods in Subnuclear Physics, Volume IV” in 1970, and had also been a contributor to numerous professional journals.
