104 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine A s a college student, Dr. Everett I. Mendelsohn was heavily involved in the sciences, particularly biology, as well as the social role and position of science in society. He credits Professor Oliver Loud for piquing his interest. In 1953, Dr. Mendelsohn graduated from Antioch College with a Bachelor of Arts, and later obtained a PhD from Harvard University in 1960. He also holds an honorary DHL from Rhode Island College. Loyal to Harvard University, Dr. Mendelsohn taught at the Ivy League institution for the entire 51 years of his career. He commenced teaching in 1960 as a research associate of science and public policy at the Graduate School of Public Administration and was named professor emeritus upon his retirement in 2011. During that time, Dr. Mendelsohn was an associate professor of the history of science from 1965 to 1969 and chairman of the Department of the History of Science in the Harvard Faculty of Arts and Sciences from 1971 to 1978 and again from 1997 to 2000. Additionally, he was Master of the Dudley House from 1997 to 2002 and a professor of the history of science from 1969 to 2011. Dr. Mendelsohn was the recipient of the Teaching Award from Phi Beta Kappa in 1996 and the Bowdoin Prize in 1957, and the Everett Mendelsohn Award for Mentorship was named in his honor. Despite these honorable achievements, Dr. Mendelsohn calls meeting and working with extremely bright and inquisitive students the highlight of his career. Proudly, 500 students enrolled in Dr. Mendelsohn’s “Science and Society in the 20th Century” course, which was the largest class at Harvard at the time; the school had difficulty finding a place to hold the class. Dr. Mendelsohn is a member of the American Academy Arts and Sciences, International Academy of the History of Science, History of Science Society, International Academy of the History of Medicine, International Council for Science Policy Studies and the American-Scandinavian Foundation. He is also a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study in Social Sciences, among many other organizations.
