121 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine F rom being by her grandmother’s side during her final years of illness, Dr. Lorraine M. Wilson was inspired to pursue a career in helping people. She commenced her career as a general practitioner and later went into different specialties, but initially received a diploma in nursing from the Bronson Methodist School of Nursing in 1953. She then achieved a BS in chemistry from Siena Heights College in 1969, an MS from the University of Michigan in 1972 and a PhD from Wayne State University in 1985. In the early years of her career from 1953 to 1969, Dr. Wilson was a staff nurse at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor and Herrick Memorial Hospital in Tecumseh, Michigan. Turning to teaching, Dr. Wilson was an assistant professor of nursing at the University of Michigan and Wayne State University. She spent 1986 to 1989 as an associate professor of nursing at Oakland University’s School of Nursing before dedicating 25 years to Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti as a full professor of nursing. Since 2014, the university has recognized her as a professor emerita. Notably in 1979, Dr. Wilson was the recipient of the American Journal of Nursing Books of the Year Award for the first edition of “Pathophysiology: Clinical Concepts of Disease Processes.” This was followed by the publication of the sixth edition in 2003 and in 2004, the publication of a “test-bank” of 3,000 multiple choice questions keyed to the Pathophysiology chapter learning objectives. Also serving as a consultant to numerous organizations, she has also received recognition from the R.C. Mahon Foundation in 1988 and the Michigan Heart Association in 1984 and 1988. Dr. Wilson attributes her success to having a good science background and always thinking clinically. She also owes credits to her mentors Helen Weber and Miss Sweet, both of Bronson; DeWitt Baker, her high school chemistry teacher and principal; and her grandmother, Bertha. Dr. Wilson is a member of the National Organization for Women, American Nurses Association, National League for Nursing, Michigan Nurses Association, Midwest Nursing Research Society and Sigma Theta Tau.
