123 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine I nspired by an order of sisters and a priest from his high school faculty, Dr. John Leonard Michael Young was given a great deal of encouragement and reassurance to follow any path he passionately chose. He felt connected to medicine, as well as his faith, and built himself an eclectic and worthwhile career backed by professional success and respect. Dr. Young received a BA, magna cum laude, from Stonehill College in 1966 and went on to obtain a ThM in 1970 and MS in 1974, both from the University of Notre Dame. In 1977, he achieved an MD from Stanford University before completing a residency in medicine at Norwalk Hospital in 1978 and a second residency in psychiatry at Yale University Medical School in 1981. A former Yale University postdoctoral fellow, he also joined the Congregation of the Holy Cross and became an ordained priest through the Roman Catholic Church in 1971. Loyal to the Yale University Medical School, Dr. Young commenced his career as an assistant professor of psychology before taking on the role of attending psychiatrist at the Whiting Forensic Division Connecticut Valley Hospital, which lasted from 1988 to 2009. At Yale, he remained an educator, rising from assistant clinical professor to associate clinical professor by 1992. Since 2004, Dr. Young has been a full clinical professor. A renowned contributor to his field, Dr. Young most recently won the 2018 Howard Zonana Alumni Award for Contributions to Forensic Psychiatry. Additionally, he was granted the 2006 Roger Coleman Award from the Connecticut Psychiatric Society, 1980 President’s Medal from Stonehill College and was named a 1976 Stanford University Medical Alumni Association Scholar. Dr. Young attributes his success to his grandparents, who were medical professionals, as well as his parents. Dr. Young is a member of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, American Medical Association, American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law, American College of Psychiatrists, International Association for Forensic Psychotherapy, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
