131 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine DEPUTY COMMISSIONER (RETIRED) Florida Department of Education Tallahassee, FL H ailing from a family of educators, Altha F. Manning always knew she wanted to work in the education sector. In 1961, she received a BA in sociology from the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, and in 1971, obtained an MS in sociology from the Illinois Institute of Technology. The recipient of the High Achiever Award from the Urban League, she has had a distinguished 30-year career in teaching and administration. Commencing her career as a teacher of social studies and sociology at the Marion County and Dade County School Boards, Ms. Manning taught similar subjects at the Learning Institute of North Carolina and High Point Central High School until 1972. For three years, she served as regional coordinator of early childhood at the North Carolina Education District Five before moving onto Daytona Beach Community College as a learning coordinator. Toward the end of her career, Ms. Manning was deputy commissioner and program director of dropout prevention for the Florida Depart- ment of Education, as well as division safety director for the Florida Department of Labor. She is a member of TESOL International and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development. ALTHA F. MANNING ELEMENTARY SCHOOL EDUCATOR, TEACHING ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL (RETIRED) Lawrence School Systems Haverhill, MA C oming from a family of immigrants, Sandra J. Kannan’s parents stressed the importance of receiving a solid education and mastering reading. Ms. Kannan ended up developing a deep love for reading, leading her to pursue a career in teaching. In 1967, she earned a BS from Suffolk University, and later in 1966, she achieved an MEd from Salem State University. From 1970 until her retirement in 2002, Ms. Kannan was a teaching assistant principal of the Lawrence School Systems in Massachusetts. Simultaneously, she was on the elementary education curriculum committee for the Phillips Academy from 1992 to 2002, and was a teacher at the Derry School District in New Hampshire from 1967 to 1970. A member of Phi Kappa Phi, Ms. Kannan is most proud of her efforts in instilling inner-city children respect for one another along with kindness. She is also proud of the yearly trips taken to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston to show her students the beauty that is outside of their hometown.
