Smith received a BS from Fordham University in 1965 and a PhD from the University of Chicago in 1972. He also holds honorary doctorates from the University of Stirling in Scotland and Trinity College Dublin in Ireland. For over 45 years, he has been a senior economist at Rand Corporation, and from 1977 to 1993, he served the corporation as director of research labor and population. At the inception of his career in 1972, he was a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. In 2017, Dr. Smith was honored with a festschrift in recognition of his exemplary career contributions to economics. In 2009, he was granted the Ulysses Medal from University College Dublin, and he received two Merit Awards from the National Institute of Health in 1995 and 2005. An editor and contributor of myriad articles in professional publications since 1980, he is also a member of the American Economic Association and Phi Beta Kappa. He sits on the Health and Retirement Survey Monitoring Committee and National Academy of Sciences Panel on Immigration, and is chair of many advisory committees for international organizations.
