186 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine NELLIE B. STRICKLAND DIRECTOR (RETIRED) United States Army Library Alexandria, VA N ellie B. Strickland became enthralled with the library sciences after taking courses during her junior year of college at Murray State University. Dual majoring in library science and education, she graduated with a BS in 1954. Desiring to travel across the world, she visited a military recruiter and subsequently began working for the Department of the Army in Fort Stewart, Georgia, as an assistant librarian until 1956. From there, she was a field librarian for the U.S. Army in Japan until 1959 and traveled throughout Europe and Vietnam as a librarian with varying responsibilities, including establishing libraries for the Army in international bases. Returning to the United States in 1973, she settled in Washington, D.C., as director of the United States Army Library until her retirement in 1994. Maintaining membership with the American Library Association, during her travels, Ms. Strickland also earned anMLS fromGeorge Peabody College in 1971, which she utilized successfully to create a resounding career for herself. Likewise, she has volunteered in libraries across numerous school districts, including the Alexandria Public School System in Virginia. Amember of KappaDelta Phi andAlpha SigmaAlpha, Ms. Strickland enjoyed familiarizing herself with unique, foreign cultures across all international platforms. She particularly enjoyed the people and culture of Japan. Mentored greatly by a staff librarian in France, Liz Schwartz, Ms. Strickland values the principles her mentor instilled in her throughout her travels. As a testament to her success, Ms. Strickland has accrued numerous accolades beginning in 1970. The recipient of an Outstanding Performance Award from Fort Benning, Georgia, she subsequently received two Armed Forces Achievement Citations in 1982 and 1994. Inducted into the Order of the White Plume, she has also been decorated by the Department of the Army for exceptional civil service and was named Volunteer of the Year by the Veterans Education Association in 1999. Born in Belmont, Mississippi, on December 12, 1932 to parents Edward and Kathleen Strickland, Ms. Strickland currently resides in Alexandria, Virginia.
