193 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine D r. J. Max Austin Jr. received an Asso- ciate Degree in 1961 and a Bachelor’s Degree in chemistry in 1963, both from Emory University, and later achieved his MD from the Medical College of Alabama in 1967. Throughout the span of his career, Dr. Austin has notably served as an Obste- trician-Gynecologist and Professor. He completed an internship at Mobile General Hospital, two residencies at Grady Memorial Hospital and the Medical College of Alabama, and by 2013, was named Professor Emeritus of Gynecologic Oncol- ogy at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. At the inception of his career in 1970, Dr. Austin was an Instructor and Chief Resident of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Medical College of Alabama. Throughout the 1970s, he worked at the University of Alabama Medical Center as an Assistant Professor, Assistant Director, Associate Director And Clinical Assistant Professor. In 1977, he spearheaded Southern GYN Oncology P.C. as President, Founder and Managing Partner, and by the late 1980s, he returned to the university’s medical center as a Clinical Associate Professor and Professor of Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology. From 2008 to 2013, he served as the Margaret Spain Chair in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Austin has received numerous accolades for his medical contributions and most recently was the recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Medical Alumni Association at the University of Alabama Medical Center. Nominated by his students for Excellence in Medical Student Education, his nomination letter stated, “Dr. Austin epitomizes the ultimate as a physician servant and as a gentleman doctor.” Humbly, he attributes his success to his work ethic and parents’ support. Outside of his achievements, Dr. Austin served with the U.S. Air Force from 1971 to 1973 as Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the base in Homestead, Florida. Dr. Austin is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and American College of Surgeons, and he is on the Board of Counselors for Emory at Oxford College. A member of numerous organizations, Dr. Austin recalls the most rewarding experience is training 42 fellows and more than 250 residents. J.
