194 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine A fter obtaining a BA in chemistry from Swarthmore College in 1959, Dr. Paul D. Berk achieved an MD from the prestigious Columbia University in 1964. By 1970, he completed an internship, residency and fellowship in hematology at the Columbia- Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City and has since paved a distinguished path for himself in medicine. Additionally, he served as commissioned officer and senior surgeon with the U.S. Public Health Service. Since 2004, Dr. Berk has served as professor within the Department of Medicine at the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. Prior to his current role, he spent 27 years at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, where he was a Henry and Lillian Stratton Professor of Molecular Medicine, and from 1989 to 2001, the chief of the Division of Liver Disease. He also served as a biochemistry professor, medicine professor and chief of the hematology division. Within the first decade of his career, Dr. Berk was a clinical associate of the National Cancer Institute’s Metabolism Branch and senior investigator from 1966 to 1973. His first teaching role was with Georgetown University as a clinical assistant professor of medicine turned clinical associate professor, and he also taught at Rockefeller University. From 1973 to 1977, Dr. Berk was the chief of diseases on the liver section of the National Institute of Health’s Arthritis Institute. Notably, Dr. Berk has been recognized for his grand contributions to medicine, and in 2004, was the recipient of the George Jamieson Humanitarian Award from the American Liver Foundation, of which he formerly served as chairman of the board. He has also received awards from the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease, Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, and Swarthmore College. Dr. Berk is a fellow of the American College of Physicians, American College of Gastroenterology and The Obesity Society. PAUL D.
