197 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine S ince she was a young girl, Dr. Mary Alice Collins knew she wanted to be part of a field that helped people. In college, she was introduced to sociology and psychology work with children and felt fulfilled each day she worked at a camp for troubled youth. She received a BA in sociology from Seattle Pacific College in 1959, MSW from the University of Michigan in 1966 and PhD from Michigan State University in 1974. Commencing her career in 1959 as the director of the teenage and adult counseling departments at the Flint YMCA in Michigan, Dr. Collins retired in 2005 after more than 45 years of professional work. Most recently from 1993 to 2005, she was a part-time adjunct assistant professor at Michigan State University, and from 1987 to 1993, she was a lecturer. Additionally, she served as vice president of the Brief Psychology Coalition in 1994, and for 21 years, worked out of a private practice in East Lansing, Michigan. In the 1970s and 1980s, Dr. Collins was a clinical and instructional social worker at the Psychological Evaluation and Treatment Center, Lansing Community College and Genesee Psychiatric Center, as well as a visiting professor at the Hurley Medical Center. For two years, she was a social worker with Catholic Social Services before serving as a consultant and social worker at the Ingham County Department of Social Services and Ingham Medical Mental Health Center, respectively. From her eclectic career, Dr. Collins takes great pride in having the opportunity to work with numerous clients and their unique challenges. She believes her profession takes a mix of creativity and theory, and always liked to add bit of humor. She thanks her mentors, Dr. Melborne Foreman and Clay Shorkey, for motivating and inspiring her. A diplomate of the American Board of Social Workers, Dr. Collins is a member of the National Association of Social Workers, Academy of Certified Social Workers, Alpha Kappa Sigma and Phi Kappa Phi. In five years’ time, she aims to continue staying active in her local community and be a reliable friend.
