205 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine HEALTH AND WELLNESS F rom spending time with his father and watching him excel as a general practitioner, Dr. Lawrence M. Fishman was inspired to pursue a career in medicine. He received a BA, magna cum laude, from Harvard College in 1955 and obtained his MD from Harvard University in 1960. By 1962, he completed an internship and assistant residency in medicine at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston. A diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners and certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine with a subspecialty in endocrinology and metabolism, Dr. Fishman has held the title of professor emeritus at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine since 2008. Spending more than 40 years with the Miller School of Medicine, Dr. Fishman had served as assistant and associate professor of medicine for eight years before becoming a full professor in 1975. Commencing his career in 1962, Dr. Fishman started off as a clinical associate of endocrinology at the National Institute of Health’s National Cancer Institute. From 1967 to 1999, he was the chief of the endocrinology and metabolism section of the Miami VA Medical Center, and was also the associate chief of staff for research from 1975 to 2003. Additionally, he was part of the advisory program at the Miller School of Medicine’s General Clinical Research Center for two years. Throughout his career, Dr. Fishman is most proud of his ability to make patients feel comfortable, rather than approaching them from a strictly business standpoint. He is also pleased to have ensured his grandchildren’s education, as he is a firm believer that education is the key to professional success. Dr. Fishman thanks his father being the greatest influence in his life, specifically showing him the importance of hard work and how to be a good person and physician. Mr. Fishman is a member of the American Federation for Clinical Research, Southern Society for Clinical Investigation, Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Xi and Alpha Omega Alpha.
