206 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine D r. J. Max Goodson’s father served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, during which time he had a roommate who was a dentist. Upon his father’s arrival home to their rural Texas dwelling, Dr. Goodson became exceptionally interested in hearing about the roommate’s profession. His father described it in jest as a jewelry-making profession, causing Dr. Goodson to become even more enamored by dentistry. In 1962, Dr. Goodson received a BA in chemistry from Texas Tech University, and in 1962, obtained a DDS from the University of Texas Health Sciences Center. Further pursuing his education, Dr. Goodson achieved an MS in dental research in 1969 and PhD in pharmacology in 1970, both from the University of Rochester. Today, Dr. Goodson holds six patents and is the author of the abstract “Life on a String: Development of the Tetracycline Fiber Delivery System,” published in Technology and Health Care in 1996. Commencing his career as a professor at the University of California San Francisco, Dr. Goodson remained in his first post-graduate position from 1969 to 1976. Since 1976, he has served as an associate clinical professor at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, as well as a senior member of the staff emeritus of The Forsyth Institute, one of the leading centers for dental and craniofacial research in the world. A member of the International Association for Dental Research, Dr. Goodson was the recipient of the International Association for Dental Research Distinguished Scientist Award. Alongside this honorable achievement, Dr. Goodson calls research the highlight of his career, specifically the connection he found between obesity and type II diabetes in Kuwait. He also went on to find a possible correlation between uranium contamination in the ground and the minor inflammation that causes obesity in the people of Kuwait through saliva samples. Dr. Goodson contributes much of his career success to the lessons he has learned from a simple life on the ranch. There, he learned that hard work is integral to success, and you can only rely upon yourself to make a living. J.
