207 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine D r. Kristene K. Gugliuzza received an AS from Lake Land College in 1977, a BS with honors from Eastern Illinois University in 1978, and an MD from the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford in 1982. By 1988, she completed a surgery internship, residency and transplantation fellowship at the Tulane University Medical School and Affiliated Hospitals, as well as a special fellowship in pancreas transplantation at the University of Minnesota in 1989. Inspired by the lifesaving work of transplants, Dr. Gugliuzza is renowned in her field, having been recognized as a Best Doctor in America since 2009 and Texas Super Doctor since 2013. In addition to her accolades, Dr. Gugliuzza has been awarded the Super Doc, Texas Medicine Award by the Texas Medical Association since 2012, and was the recipient of the Trailblazer Award from the 25th Annual Texas Transplantation Society’s Women and Organ Transplant Conference. She was the recipient of the Golden Scalpel Award for Outstanding Teacher in Surgery in 2002, named to the American Association of Community Colleges Outstanding Alumni in 1998 and received the Outstanding Alumnus Award from Lake Land College in 1989. Since 2003, Dr. Gugliuzza has been a professor of surgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. Since 1990, she has also served in numerous other roles at the institution, including transplant director, general surgery program director, abdominal transplant section director, and assistant and associate professor. She commenced her career in 1988 with the Tulane University Medical School and Affiliated Hospitals as an instructor of surgery and research associate in surgery and transplantation. Dr. Gugliuzza is amember of the AmericanMedical Association, American Diabetes Association, Galveston County Medical Society, Texas Medical Association, Association of Women Surgeons, Association Academy of Surgery and American Society of Transplant Physicians. A William Osler Emeritus Scholar by the John P. McGovern Academy of Oslerian Medicine, she is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
