208 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine F rom watching his mother excel as a nurse, Dr. Peter M. Haney knew from a young age he wanted to become a doctor. Additionally, he enjoyed biology as a student, and applied the interests to healthcare, ultimatelypursuing a career in science. He received a BS in 1979 from the University of Scranton, and a PhD in 1984 and aMD in 1986, both fromCase Western Reserve University. By 1989, Dr. Haney completed an internship and residency in pediatrics at Johns Hopkins University, and in 1992, finished a fellowship in newborn medicine at Washington University in St. Louis. He ultimately chose to pursue neonatology because of its emphasis on taking care of the patient as a whole, as opposed to just one specialized area. Today, Dr. Haney is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a member of the Society for Pediatric Research. He says the highlight of his career has simply been the daily experiences of caring for his patients. Dr. Haney currently serves as chairman of the Woman’s Hospital of Texas’ Ethics Committee and is a staff neonatologist at the Woman’s Hospital of Texas, C-HCA, Inc. He also served as a staff neonatologist at Houston Neonatal Perinatal Physicians from 2006 to 2009. Likewise, he was an assistant professor of pediatrics at the Baylor College of Medicine from 1997 to 2006 and assistant professor of cell biology and physiology at Washington University in St. Louis’ School of Medicine from 1995 to 1997. He previously taught withinWashington University’s Department of Pediatrics as an instructor and assistant professor, and was the director of their Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship Program from 1993 to 1997. Notably, Dr. Haney was the recipient of the First Award from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services’ National Institutes of Health from 1998 to 2003. He took home the Investigator Award from the Department of Defense’s Breast Cancer Research Program from 1996 to 1999, and won the National Research Service Award from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services’ National Institutes of Health in 1992, 1993 and 1994.
