229 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine D r. Shara Sand received a BMus in trombone from the Manhattan School of Music in 1983 and MA in trombone performance from the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music in 1985, and supported herself by working for a psychotherapy institute. Her interest in psychology increasingly grew, which prompted her to continue her studies. In 1990, she earned an MA in psychology from Yeshiva University, and in 1993, a PsyD in clinical psychology. Serving as a psychologist for more than 30 years, Dr. Sand has worked out of her private practice since 1995 and has been assistant director of clinical training at Yeshiva University’s Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology since 1994. Additionally, she has served as associate professor of psychology at LaGuardia Community College since 2008. Keeping in touch with her musical roots, since 2012 Dr. Sand has been director of counseling services at the Manhattan School of Music. From 2005 to 2008, she was an adjunct clinical supervisor of the counseling center at Pace University, and commenced her career as a faculty member at Yeshiva in 1988. Dr. Sand is a member of the American Psychological Association (APA), Local 802 Associated Musicians of Greater New York, American Federation of Musicians and New York State Psychological Association. From 2010 to 2011, she was the president of the Division of Social Issues. Since 2011, she has been co-chair of the Committee on Sexualities and Gender Identities, APA Div. 39: Society for Psychoanalysis and Psychoanalytic Psychology, of which she was granted the Diversity Award in 2019. She also received an award from the New York State Psychological Association Forensic Division in 2018, as well as a Certificate of Appreciation from APA Division 44 in 2014. Dr. Sand attributes her success to flexible thinking and openness to others’ experiences. She only worries about the things that she has the capacity to change, as opposed to those she has no power over. Looking ahead, Dr. Sand plans to write a book and remains driven to facilitate the growth and confidence of her fellow community members in the face of a hostile world.
