232 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine G leaning inspiration and encouragement from her grandmother, Amy B. Sowers pursed a career in speech pathology and received a BA in 1975 and an MA in 1993, both from the University of Houston. Now a certified speech-language pathologist in the state of Texas, Ms. Sowers is also involved with the performing arts, serving as the executive director to the Bravo Company Performing Arts School since 2009. At the inception of her career in the 1970s, Ms. Sowers was a speech- language pathologist at the Aldine, Tomball and Conroe Independent School Districts. From 1996 to 2000, she was the lead therapist and consultant at the Montgomery Independent School District, and from 2016 to 2018, she held a supervisory position at Home Health Care. Additionally, for 20 years, Ms. Sowers upheld a private practice in speech- language pathology. The most rewarding aspect of Ms. Sowers’ profession is seeing children make progress no matter where they start. Even when they make a small step, it is a big step to that child and should be celebrated. A highlight of her career was working with a child with a severe communication issue who later went on to attend college. She was also honored to be present for a 5 year old client’s first words. Within the field of performing arts, Ms. Sowers is the founder of the Bravo Company Performing Arts School and Crighton Kidz, as well as a founding member of Stage Right of Texas and Crighton Players. From 1999 to 2001, Ms. Sowers was the president of the Crighton Theater Foundation, and for 10 years until 2008, she was the executive director of Crighton Players Performing Arts School for Youth. Notably, Ms. Sowers was the recipient of the Pursuit of Excellence Award from the Crighton Theatre Foundation. Ms. Sowers is a member of the National Education Association, American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, Texas Speech-Language Hearing Association, Texas Education Agency, Houston Association for Communications Disorders, Montgomery County Performing Arts Society and the University of Houston Alumni Association.
