233 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine G rowing up, Dr. George Tawil was encouraged by his family to pursue his dreams and goals. Noting that his family recognized that he was innately curious about psychiatry, he was provided the resources and education required to fulfill his ambitions. Since that time, he has been met with terrific success and has often been described by his colleagues as an individual who emits positive energy. Currently running his own medical office in Athens, Greece, Dr. Tawil opines that his journey toward becoming a doctor and educator was natural; he says that he was born to provide care and answers to those struggling with illnesses. He believes that disease results from the internal conflict between the organism and the universe, and his goal has always been to join them into one entity where competition ceases to exist. Working in his own office in the afternoons, Dr. Tawil often joins colleagues in other hospitals and facilities to express his medical opinion on difficult cases. Drawing upon an MD and PhD in psychosomat- ics from the University of Athens in his native Greece, Dr. Tawil also completed postgraduate work at the University of Wisconsin and Baylor University in Houston. In 1991, he completed a Fulbright doctorate program in Athens. Along- side his own medical practice, Dr. Tawil has also been an academic advisor for La Salle University in Athens since 1996, having previously served as an assistant professor and researcher for the University of Athens from the early 1980s to early 1990s. He commenced his career in 1982 as a staff member of the Dromokaition Psychiatric Hospital of Athens. A contributor of a variety of articles to professional journals, Dr. Tawil maintains affiliation with the Greek Society of Neurology and Psychiatry, the Greek Society for the Mental Health of Children, the Hellenic Psychiatric Association, the American Psychiatric Association and the American Psychosomatic Society, among other organizations. He cites a career highlight to be the moments he has eased his patients’ pain and suffering through the use of psychotherapy, which has often alleviated symptoms of such incurable diseases as cancer or multiple sclerosis.
