Working Definition Green Goods and Services Green jobs that fall into this category produce goods and services that benefit the ecosystem. These goods and services are offered to consumers. According to the BLS definition, green goods and services fall into one of five groups: energy from renewable resources; energy efficiency; conservation of natural resources; environmental compliance and education; and pollution reduction and removal, greenhouse gas reduction and recycling. Green Production In green production processes, workers use technologies and procedures that decrease the environmental impact of manufacturing and packaging goods or providing services. According to the BLS definition, these technologies and procedures fall into one or more of four categories: energy from renewable resources; conservation of natural resources; energy efficiency; and pollution reduction and removal, greenhouse gas reduction and recycling. BLS Survey In a survey of more than 2.1 million establishments, the largest numbers of green businesses were found to be in the construction and services industries. An estimated 38.1 percent of green enterprises were involved in construction, while 36.2 percent were in professional and business services. Another 8.5 percent of green companies were in other services such as repair and maintenance or professional organizations.
