253 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine B orn and raised in Altavista, Virginia, E. H. “Beau” Lane III’s family owned a furniture company and encouraged him to join the family business. The problem, however, was that Mr. Lane was not interested in woodworking – he loved horses. Attending military school for the following five years, he became a battalion commander. By an eclectic turn of events and the natural progression of life, Mr. Lane now serves as a breeder, trainer, racer, horseman and owner of the Beau Lane Bloodstock, maintaining his flourishing practice for more than 50 years. Before his horse-keeping days, Mr. Lane received a scholarship to the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. However, he was forced to stop playing due to an excess of injuries. In search of something new to take the place of football and his other sports endeavors, Mr. Lane moved to Wyoming and worked on a cattle ranch, bringing him back to the root of his passions: cultivating horses. For more than 50 years, Mr. Lane has operated his 160-acreWoodline Farm in Bourbon County, an area with a rich thoroughbred breeding history. In 1967, he was a national champion with the Appaloosa horse breed and is a past president of the Quarter Races Order of Virginia. Mr. Lane attributes his career success to hard work. Moving to Kentucky with very little money, his wife always encouraged him that “the game is not over yet.” Today, Mr. Lane works and lives by that motto, as well as his own creed: “When you are an anvil, bear; a hammer, strike.” In light of his exceptional career in the horse breeding industry, Mr. Lane calls the highlights of his life to be his marriages to two wonderful women: Juliana Wright, to whom he was married for 45 years until her passing, and Gail McMichael, whom he married in 2008. Mr. Lane is the proud father of three daughters, three grandsons and one granddaughter. Looking toward the future, Mr. Lane intends to continue breeding, training and racing horses, all whilst experiencing the continued growth and success of his career. E.
