Hatley was advised to pursue political science, as the methodologies of the two subjects were similar. Shortly after this epiphany, Mr. Hatley received a BA from Rhodes College in 1983, JD from Memphis State University in 1986 and LLM in taxation from the University of San Diego in 1996. From 1996 to 2018, Mr. Hatley served as the founder of Hatley Law Group, P.C., for which he was named a Top Wealth Manager of San Diego by San Diego Magazine in 2019 and a Best Attorney in Estate Planning by San Diego Metro Magazine in 2018. Mr. Hatley got his start in law in the 1980s as an associate with Byrd, Cobb, et al. and Gatti, Keltner & Bienvenu. Mr. Hatley’s second career was spent with the U.S. Navy as a criminal defense counsel and legal assistant attorney in San Francisco. In 1990, he became officer-in-charge of the Naval Legal Service Office Detachment in Mountain View, California, and from 1991 to 1995, he served as a staff judge advocate at the Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake in Ridgecrest, California. Mr. Hatley also spent 1988 to 1997 in the Naval Reserves. He was highly regarded by the Navy and received two Commendation Medals and one National Defense Service Medal. Mr. Hatley is a member of the Coronado Historical Association, La Jolla Historical Society, North County Estate Planning Council, the University of San Diego’s Planned Giving Council, Rady Children’s Hospital Foundations Estates and Trusts Council, Rancho Santa Fe Historical Society, Rancho Santa Fe Literary Society, San Diego County Bar Association, University Club and WealthCounsel LLC. Mr. Hatley also sits on the board of directors for the Business Executives Council and San Diego Downtown Breakfast Rotary Club and on committees with the American Cancer Society, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of San Diego, Navy League of the United States’ San Diego Council, Association for Corporate Growth and Challenged Athletes Foundation.
