276 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine R obert S. Medvecky received a Bachelor of Arts from Dartmouth College in 1952 and had no set plan on where his career was headed. He decided to attend law school for the challenge, and in 1955, he obtained a JD from Harvard Law School. He was admitted to the State Bars of Illinois in 1955, Connecticut in 1958, District of Columbia in 1972 and Florida in 1989. Mr. Medvecky commenced his career as an associate for Lord, Bissell & Brook in Chicago in 1955. From 1957 to 1971, he was general attorney at Southern New England Telephone Co. in New Haven, Connecticut, before serving as vice president, general counsel and secretary at Amtrak in Washington, D.C., for four years until 1975. Heading back to his roots, Mr. Medvecky became a partner at Lord, Bissell & Brook from 1975 to 1978 and was a partner at Reid & Priest in New York City from 1978 to 1987. Although he has experienced much success, the highlight of Mr. Medvecky’s career was being appointed his position at the National Railroad Passenger Corporation, now known as Amtrak. He hired the entire legal department. It came together quickly and was a unique private for- profit corporation funded by the United States Congress. Of all his major accomplishments, Mr. Medvecky is especially proud of his family, including his wife Ellen; children Allison, Beth, Craig, and daughter-in-law Jill; and grandchildren Laurel, Alan and Aaron. Beth, Craig, Jill and Laurel are all professors at Cornell University, Loyola University Maryland, Johns Hopkins Medical School and a nursing school in Tampa, respectively. Allison is retired from the non-profit health sector, Alan is an officer in Silicon Valley and Aaron works for the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce in Nevada. Mr. Medvecky’s advice to those aspiring to work in his industry is to work hard and make sure to not cut corners to try to finish work faster than expected. An avid swimmer, Mr. Medvecky is a member of the Harvard Club in New York and the Fiddlesticks Country Club in Fort Meyers, Florida, as well as several fitness and health clubs.
