280 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine W atching the civil rights movement unfold before his youthful eyes, Justice Thurgood Marshall became larger than life to Lawrence P. Nolan. Through his influence, Mr. Nolan pursued a career in law. In 1971, he achieved a BA from Western Michigan University, and in 1976, obtained a JD from Western Michigan Thomas M. Cooley Law School. He is now admitted to practice in Michigan and the District of Columbia. Mr. Nolan commenced his career as a circuit court case evaluator for Eaton, Ingham and Clinton counties. In 1976, he became an instructor of agriculture and farm law at Michigan State University, excelling for 26 years. He has also served as founder and president of Nolan, Thomsen & Villas, PC, in Eaton Rapids, Michigan. A member of the board of directors of the Western Michigan University Thomas M. Cooley Law School since 1983, he served as chairman of the board from 2012 to 2020. He has also served on the board for the Cooley Lawyers Credit Union and Michigan Supreme Court Historical Society. Mr. Nolan received the 2019 Roberts P. Hudson Award from the State Bar of Michigan, was named each year to Detroit News’ Top Lawyers by Michigan Super Lawyers between 2011 and 2019, and has received Martindale-Hubbell’s AV Preeminent Ratings since 2017. He has also been granted the People’s Choice Award for Attorney at Law by the Lansing Community Newspapers five times, was named 2018 Lawyer of the Year in the State of Michigan and 2017 and 2018 Lawyer of the Year for Personal Injury Litigation by Best Lawyers in America. He was also the 2017 recipient of the Davis-Dunnings Trailblazer Award and inducted into the Michigan Lawyers Weekly’s Attorney Hall of Fame. Mr. Nolan is a member of the District of Columbia Bar Association, American Bar Association, American Bar Foundation, American Board of Trial Advocates, Michigan Association for Justice, American Trial Lawyers Association, Eaton County Bar Association, and Ingham County Bar Foundation.
