Spelfogel’s goal in law was to get involved in government-related matters, such as antitrust, securities and labor law. He received a BA from Harvard University in 1956 and a JD from Columbia University in 1959. He was admitted to practice law in Massachusetts and New York, and before the U.S. Supreme Court. Specializing in labor and employment law, Mr. Spelfogel is senior counsel with Phillips Nizer LLP. Recently, he won a U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit case, Saleem, et al. v. Corporate Transportation Group et al., a significant class action case involving hundreds of drivers and limousine services in New York, holding that they were independent contractors, not employees. Earlier in his career, Mr. Spelfogel was an attorney for the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Solicitor in Washington D.C. and Boston, and for the National Labor Relations Board in Boston and New York. Between 1977 and 2018, he was a partner at Fellner, Rovins & Gallay, Summit, Rovins & Feldesman and Epstein, Becker & Green. Prior to those appointments, he was an associate at Simpson, Thacher & Bartlett and Dewey Ballantine. Mr. Spelfogel has taught at the Columbia University Law School, Baruch College, St. John’s University, New York University, Southern Methodist University, Boston University and the University of Washington. Notably, he was the recipient of the 2014 Samuel M. Kaynard Award for excellence in labor and employment law. He has also been recognized by the Best Lawyers in America in Labor Law from 1995 through 2019, and Super Lawyers of the New York Metro Area in Employment and Labor Law from 2006 to 2019. Mr. Spelfogel is a member of the American Bar Association, New York State Bar Association, New York City Bar Association, Labor and Employment Relations Association and American Arbitration Association.
