291 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine D avid Sumo Meltzer has been the owner of Sumo Japanese Steakhouse in San Antonio, Texas, since 2016. Sumo Japanese Steakhouse is a traditional Japanese hibachi steakhouse, specializing in sushi and the Japanese style of cooking, teppanyaki. The restaurant also offers customers juicy steaks, tender chicken, fresh seafood and savory vegetables coupled with great service and tableside entertainment. Mr. Sumo Meltzer became interested in the business due to a gentleman from Japan who taught him the fundamentals of Japanese cuisine. Notably, this gentleman was the first master of sushi to visit Texas. Additionally, Mr. Sumo Meltzer came from a restaurateur family. He recalls when his father opened his first restaurant in the early 1990s when he was just a child, but he remembers the feeling of excitement realizing that a new chapter was about to start in both of their lives. Invested in his restaurant’s success, Mr. Sumo Meltzer does his own marketing, has become a respected public speaker and is well known for his humble attitude. In five years’ time, he aims to open three more restaurants, with one specializing in Chinese barbecue. His goal is to open his second location by 2020. Prior to takingon the roleof owner of the community-renowned restaurant, Mr. Sumo Meltzer started off at Sumo San Antonio as an employee, working between the years of 2011 and 2016. He also has previous experience from working at the hibachi chain restaurant Benihana, Inc., in their San Antonio location. For his contributions to the restaurant industry, Mr. Sumo Meltzer was the recipient of the Gold Award and Reader’s Choice Award from San Antonio News. Additionally, he was awarded a private by the Texas Ranger Association. Mr. Sumo Meltzer thanks his sister, Lauren Lyons, and his mother, Arlene Farr, for being his mentors, as well as his father, Bradley Meltzer, for helping him get his start in the business. He also thanks his wife, Rosemarie, for all of her support and their daughter, Mekayla, for giving him the drive to be the best he can be.
