292 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine F rom a young age, Dr. James A. Amick has had an interest in physical science, especially in chemistry and electronics. He received a BA in chemistry in 1949, anMA in 1951 and a PhD in physical chemistry in 1952, all from Princeton University. After a post-doctoral year at Princeton, he joined the Princeton Laboratories of RCA as a materials scientist, carrying out research on topics including Electrofax®, an electro-photographic process; chemical vapor disposition of gallium arsenide and gallium phosphide on germanium substrates (heteroepitaxy) and novel processes for fabricating silicon solar cells. For his research, he was awarded three RCA Laboratories Achievement Awards and in 1967 he was named co-recipient of a David Sarnoff Team Award in Science. In 1976, Dr. Amick moved to the Exxon Research Laboratories to conduct and guide research on improved processes for manufacturing high-efficiency silicon solar cells in support of Exxon’s subsidiary, Solar Power Corporation. In partnership with Elkem, this research program resulted in a low-cost solar grade silicon produced directly in an arc furnace. In addition, rice hulls, a low- cost by-product of rice refining, were successfully tested as a replacement for high purity silica, the standard feedstock for solar-grade silicon. In 1987, Dr. Amick moved to the Mobil Solar Energy Corporation as Manager of Solar Cell Processing Research and Development. There, he guided and participated in the development of simplified processes for the fabrication of high efficiency solar cells and methods for encapsulating them. Retiring fromMobil Solar Energy Corporation in 1993, he founded his own consulting business, Amick Associates. He also served as secretary and treasurer for his wife’s non-profit organization, the Princeton Braillists. Dr. Amick has been an active member of the Electrochemical Society, serving as secretary, vice president, a member of the board of directors and president between 1984 and 1995. He is a member of Sigma Xi, the American Chemical Society, Alpha Chi Sigma’s New York Professional Chapter, American Institute of Chemists and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. During his career, Dr. Amick has authored or coauthored seven U.S. patents and 44 publications in scientific journals. JAMES A.
