301 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine D iscovering her interest for science at her elementary school science fair, Dr. Eileen K. Jaffe chose to become a scientist at 7 years old. She achieved a BS in chemistry from the State University of New York at Cortland in 1975, where she became fascinated by how metal ions interact with proteins. Supported by the National Science Foundation, she earned a PhD in biochemistry from the University of Pennsylvania in 1979. Dr. Jaffe continued with an NIH postdoctoral fellowship in chemistry and enzymology at Harvard, and upon commencing her career, she conducted research on an enzyme’s connection to lead poisoning. This led to introducing themorpheeinmodel of allostery. She describes themorpheein model of allostery as a dissociative model that describes an equilibrium of alternate quaternary structure assemblies whose architectures are dictated by alternate conformations of the dissociated protomers. Since 1991, Dr. Jaffe has risen through the ranks to become a professor at the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia. Prior, she was a research assistant and research associate professor at the University of Pennsylvania from 1984 to 1991 and briefly a research assistant professor at Thomas Jefferson University in 1983. She also served as a temporary assistant professor of chemistry at Haverford College from 1981 to 1983 following the postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard. Notably, Dr. Jaffe was the recipient of the Elizabeth Bingham Mentoring Award from AWIS-PHL for her work in advancing the careers of women in science, as well as an Academic Hall of Fame Inaugural Inductee at SUNY Cortland in 2006. Dr. Jaffe attributes much of her career success to themajor influences throughout her career, including Dr. Arden Zipp, her chemistry professor and undergraduate mentor at SUNY Cortland; Professor Mildred Cohn, her graduate mentor at UPenn; and Professor Jeremy R. Knowles, her postgraduate mentor at Harvard. Dr. Jaffe is a member of the American Chemical Society, American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and American Association for the Advancement of Science. She also contributes to journals. EILEEN K. JAFFE, PHD PROFESSOR Fox Chase Cancer Center Philadelphia, PA SCIENCES, PHARMACEUTICALS AND BIOTECHNOLOGY
