310 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine G rowing up in China, Dr. Hong Shih was surrounded by civil unrest and revolutions, and he was faced with the ultimatum of joining the revolution or enrolling in university. By choosing the latter, Dr. Shih propelled himself into an educational journey that took him across the world. He received a BS in chemistry from Peking University in China in 1970 and an MS in electrochemistry from the Electric Power Institute in 1981. Subsequently, he achieved a PhD in metallurgy at Pennsylvania State University in 1986 and was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Southern California. Since 2002, Dr. Shih has been a technical director at the Lam Research Corporation, and since 2014, he has served as fellow of the Etch Products Group. In 1992, he was president and chief research scientist at Cortech, and he taught at the University of Southern California for two years. Dr. Shih has also conducted research with Applied Materials, FMC Corporation Technical Center, GM Research Lab, USC and Penn State. At the inception of Dr. Shih’s career in China in the 1970s, he was a heat treat and analytical chemistry engineer at Electric Power & Machinery Factory, as well as a research engineer at Academia Sinica. Today, Dr. Shih is an expert in plasma resistance materials, anodized aluminum, surface coatings, precision wet cleaning particle, and metal contamination reduction on plasma etching equipment served in semiconductor wafer fabrication. He holds over 75 U.S. patents and over 165 international patents. He has 120 publications in Journals on Electrochemistry and Corrosion. Notably, Dr. Shih received recognition for Outstanding Technical Achievement from Lam Research in 2017, the McFarland Award from Penn State in 2004 and Wesley W. Founder Award in 1993. In 1984, he was the first place winner of the graduate poster contest at the National Association of Corrosion Engineers. Dr. Shih is most proud of editing the book “Corrosion Resistance” in 2012 and his pioneering studies of material under high density plasma.
