MARK LEONARD APPOLD PASTOR, RELIGION EDUCATOR Faith Lutheran Church, Truman State University Kirksville, MO years, he served as pastor in the congregation and campus ministry of Faith Lutheran Church in Kirksville, Missouri, and for an addition 18 years, he served as pastor in Faith’s mission congregation at St. Paul Lutheran in Memphis, Missouri. In addition to his pastoral and campus ministry, Dr. Appold spent 42 years teaching in the Department of Philosophy and Religion at Truman State University. His areas of instruction focused on Hebrew and Greek, biblical studies and church history. Over the years, he also gave guest lectures at the University of Iowa, Christ Seminary in St. Louis, Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago and Concordia Seminary in Nagercoil, India. His teaching career began while still in Germany when serving as campus pastor in Cologne, where he had study groups in biblical texts. Dr. Appold received a ThD in New Testament studies with Professor Ernst Käsemann at the University of Tübingen in Germany and previously an STM from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, with one year of vicarage at Christ Lutheran in Washington, D.C. During his ministry in Kirksville, he presented at international meetings of the Society of Biblical Literature in Hungary, Switzerland, South Africa, Italy, England, Austria, Singapore, Scotland, New Zealand, Estonia, Argentina and South Korea. Dr. Appold is a member of the Society of Biblical Literature and American Academy of Religion. He was chair of Kirksville Hospital Chaplaincy, Inc., on the board for Kirksville Osteopathic Medical Center, president of Kirksville Interchurch Ministries and co-director of the Bethsaida Archaeological Dig site in Israel. For 20 years, Dr. Appold led students to the Middle East for a study abroad trip, which included two weeks of archaeological work at the biblical site of Bethsaida, plus travel through Jerusalem, West Bank, Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Turkey. D r. Mark Leonard Appold’s decision to devote his life to pastoral ministry was made at an early age. With four relatives serving as Lutheran pastors, and his father and grandfathers serving as Lutheran school teachers, Dr. Appold’s universe revolved around his faith, which kept him grounded in all aspects of his life.
