Royce Eugene Ballinger received a BA from the University of Texas in 1964, an MS from Texas Tech University in 1967 and a PhD from Texas A&M University in 1971. From working as an undergraduate student with Professor W.F. Blair, Dr. Ballinger originally wanted to pursue a career in park services; however, he soon enough found his passions for teaching and the sciences. Commencing his teaching career as an assistant professor of biology at Angelo State University in 1971, Dr. Ballinger was promoted to associate professor in 1974. By 1976, he became an associate professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. In 1982, he became the director of biological sciences, and in 1993, was appointed associate vice chancellor of research. Additionally, from 1982 to 2005, he served as a professor, and from 2000 to 2005, he was assistant executive vice president and assistant provost – he was also elected president of the Academic Senate for one term. He was named professor emeritus in 2004. Backed by several accolades from NASA and the Department of Defense and Department of Energy, Dr. Ballinger was a research grantee of the National Science Foundation from 1968 to 1980, and in 1993. He is a member of the Ecological Society of America, American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists, Sigma Xi and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Additionally, he has authored “How to Know Amphibians and Reptiles,” “Amphibians and Reptiles of Nebraska,” “Natural History of the Ironwood Forest National Monument: A Sonoran Desert Primer,” and almost 150 technical research publications. Over his career, Dr. Ballinger considers his greatest highlights as serving as director of Nebraska EPSCoR through the National Science Foundation, through which he worked for a statewide committee appointed by the governor. Additionally, he has worked with the Arizona Site Steward program, coordinated by the state archaeologist, and is comprised of volunteers who monitor archaeological sites for possible vandalism. Most of all, however, Dr. Ballinger is most proud to have contributed to the development of numerous students who have gone on to earn their PhDs.
