72 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine D riven to help people improve their lives, Charlotte Grace Buzzelli received a BS in education and an MS in education from the University of Akron. She is known for pioneering the first special education state chartered school program in Ohio for adult state psychiatric hospitals and developing the first community-based adult basic education program in state institutions and the JTPA grant for state mental hospitals. From 1977 to 2002, Ms. Buzzelli worked through the Ohio Department of Mental Health for multiple institutions. She was a training coordinator for Northeast Regional and program educator for Sagamore Hills Children’s Psychiatric Hospital, State Operated Services. She was also a developer of the Job Training Partnership Grant Program and Special Needs Handicapped Grant Program with Fallsview Psychiatric Hospital and Director of Education at Fallsview, serving on the Clinical Directors Team Committee meetings and attending Medical Grand Rounds. Prior to serving the state department, Ms. Buzzelli was a program coordinator and teacher for the continuing education program at the Akron Montessori School and a teacher at the St. Anthony School. She was a civil servant for the City of Akron during her undergraduate studies. The highlight of her career was having 16 and 84 year old students learn to read and write for the first time. Ms. Buzzelli has been the subject of numerous recognitions and was the recipient of the Women’s Achievement Award from Akron Public Schools, Akron Homeless Shelter and OSIA Collaboration, Distinguished Education Award from the University of Akron and the Ohio State Champion Partnership Award. Ms. Buzzelli is a member of the Council for Exceptional Children, Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, International Reading Association, and University of Akron Alumni Association, among others. She is employed with Project Learn Grant and Project Rise Grant Akron Public Schools Homeless Program, a total of 50 years in the field of education during her lifetime as of 2020.
