73 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine To add to his expertise, in 1987 he earned an MA in psychology, and in 1990, a PhD in social psychology, both from the University of California Davis. Enjoying the application and research of space systems engineering, he also came to discover a liking for mentoring and teaching. Today, Dr. Caldwell serves as a professor at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, and is director of the NASA Indiana Space Grant Consortium as of 2002. He commenced his years at Purdue as an associate professor from 2000 to 2010, with previous experience as an assistant and associate professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1990 to 2000. In his first teaching role, Dr. Caldwell was a graduate student lecturer at the University of California Davis from 1985 to 1990. Alongside his career in teaching, Dr. Caldwell has been the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments since 2012. He was a Graduate Research Program Fellow of the National Science Foundation in 1985 and was the recipient of their Minority Research Initiation Award in 1994. Additionally, he was a Jefferson Science Fellowat the National Academies from2016 to 2017 and notably received the Purdue University College of Engineering Outreach and Engagement Award in 2018. Dr. Caldwell is a member of the National Council of Space Grant Directors, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, American Society of Engineering Education, and Institute for Industrial, Systems Engineers, as well as numerous National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine panels. He is also a fellow of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, where he is a past chair of the technical program committee. Dr. Caldwell’s advice to budding scientists is to be interested in multiple fields, because the most complex problems are integrations of several features. W ith initial interest in Apollo programs, Dr. Barrett S. Caldwell yearned for work in science to stimulate his ever-growing analytical mind. He went on to receive a BS in aeronautics and astronautics in 1985 and a second BS in humanities in 1985, both from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. BARRETT S.
