74 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine W hile in high school, June Evans Carpenter was associated with Future Teachers of America, where she worked with elementary age children and was inspired to continue working with the youth. From this enriching experience, Ms. Carpenter received a BA from Auburn University in 1974 and an MS in education from Troy State University in 1989. A certified Class A teacher by the State of Alabama, Ms. Carpenter retired from her role as chair of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Accreditation Steering Committee at the Elmore County Board of Education in 2008. In that role for 11 years, Ms. Carpenter commenced her career in 1981 as a teacher for the First United Methodist Church kindergarten for eight years, and was promoted to assistant director in 1982. From 1974 to 2008, Ms. Carpenter worked for the Elmore County Board of Education. She began as an elementary school teacher in 1974 and was an elementary teacher for chapter one reading and mathematics from 1989 to 1995. Choosing to focus on reading, she was a coordinator of writing to reading teacher, title I reading laboratory teacher and building chair. Over her career, Ms. Carpenter has received great recognition for her work. For the 1999- 2000 school year, she was named Elmore County School System Teacher of the Year, and in 1990, took home an Excellence in Leadership Award and Cooperation in Teaching Award from Alpha Delta Kappa and the Elmore County Board of Education, respectively. In 1989, she was recognized by the Girl Scouts of America and was the recipient of the Award for Outstanding Volume of Work from Wetumpka Elementary School. Ms. Carpenter attributes her success to the educators who served as role models and mentors to her, especially her sixth grade teacher, Doris P. Beatty. Ms. Carpenter is a member of the National Education Association, Alabama Education Association and Elmore County Education Association.
