79 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine D r. Wayne King Durfee received a BS in agriculture in 1950 and an MS in poultry science in 1953, both from the University of Rhode Island (URI). In 1963, he achieved a PhD in poultry physiology from Rutgers University. Dr. Durfee taught at URI for nearly 40 years, and in 1989, he was named professor emeritus. Over the course of his career, Dr. Durfee received three grants regarding chick development, electric and magnetic fields in chicks, and diseases and parasites in mollusks. At the start of the 1950s, Dr. Durfee was an instructor at the university, quickly moving up to assistant professor in 1957 and associate professor in 1964. From 1974 to 1976, he was elected as the university ombudsman, and from 1978 to 1989, he was a professor of fisheries, animal and veterinary science. Additionally, from 1967 to 1983, Dr. Durfee was research project manager at the Rhode Island Agricultural Experiment Station in Kingston. Notably, Dr. Durfee established the Aquaculture Merit Scholarship and the Hope Lodge Masonic scholarship at URI. Established at the time of his retirement, the university was paying Dr. Durfee for unused vacation time; however, he used the money to establish the scholarships. Of his many achievements, Dr. Durfee also established and funded for the perpetual care of a Heritage Flock of Rhode Island Red Fowl at the South County Museum and developed two historical narratives about southern Rhode Island. Dr. Durfee credits his cousin and noted local artist, James A. King, for inspiring him during his naval service and high school years. He also recognizes Professor William H. Wiley for encouraging him to enter his field. Dr. Durfee’s advice to future professionals is to live in moderation, always be truthful, maintain high standards and recognize the value of other people. Throughout his career, Dr. Durfee has been a member of Hope Masonic Lodge AFAAM, the American Association of University Professors, Ocean State Aquaculture Association, National Shellfisheries Association, World Aquaculture Society, Masons Lodge and Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society.
