82 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine W ith the initial intention to become a nurse, Dr. Vicki Ann Edwards had to come up with a different path after realizing nursing was not for her. She soon realized that nursing and education had great similarities and chose to pursue a career in teaching. Dr. Edwards received a BS in education from Midland University in 1972 and two MA degrees in education from the Arizona State University and Northern Arizona State University in 1979 and 1986, respectively. Additionally, she achieved an EdD in curriculum and instruction from Northern Arizona State University in 1988. Commencing her career as a language arts teacher with Arlington Public Schools and Glendale Elementary School District between 1972 and 1980, Dr. Edwards currently serves as a student teacher supervisor at the Arizona State University, a role she has held for 10 years. Prior, she worked at the Deer Valley School District, where she had been principal, reading specialist and director of assessment. In 2004, Dr. Edwards was a mentor teacher at Midland University in Fremont, Nebraska, and was the recipient of the Mentor Award. Alongside her recognitions, Dr. Edwards received the Mountain Shadows PTSA Outstanding Educator Award in 2001 and U.S. West Communications’ Award of Achievement in 1992. Outside of her work in education, Dr. Edwards has contributed creatively in educational growth and development. Dr. Edwards was the author of “Assessing Early Reading Skills with the Mountain Shadows Phonemic Awareness Scale” in 2004 and “One Year Stability of the Elementary Reading Attitude Survey” in 1995, which were both published in educational journals. She also authored the 1992 “Extracurricular Reading and Reading Achievement: The Rich Stay Rich and the Poor Don’t Read” and the 1988 “The Search for the Ideal Teacher: Research on Teacher Characteristics, 1890-1950.” Dr. Edwards is a member of the International Literacy Association and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development.
