92 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine B ecoming interested in physics in high school, Dr. Richard Webb Haymaker sought to grasp the great theories within the science throughout his youth. Understanding and contributing to physics was a dream of the young Dr. Haymaker, and his dreams came true upon achieving a BA in physics from Carleton College in 1961 and a PhD in physics from the University of California Berkeley in 1967. Dr. Haymaker is now known for publishing approximately 100 physics papers and for his advanced research on dynamics symmetry, space structure of confining strings and color flux in SU(2) lattice gauge theory. Dr. Haymaker commenced his career at the University of California Santa Barbara in 1967 as an assistant research physicist turned lecturer by 1969. That same year, he went to work for Cornell University, where for three years, he served as an instructor, research associate and acting assistant professor. In 1971, Dr. Haymaker joined the faculty at Louisiana State University, where since 2003, he has been named professor emeritus. Between 1971 and 2003, he also excelled as an assistant, associate and full professor. Outside of his teaching positions, Dr. Haymaker was a visiting scientist at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in India and Japan from 1985 to 1986, as well as a visiting scientist at the KEK National Laboratory. From 1977 to 1978, he was a visiting staff member at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. Dr. Haymaker is a member of the American Physical Society, Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi, and was president of the Baton Rouge Council on Human Relations from 2003 to 2006. Notably, in 2013, Dr. Haymaker was the recipient of the Powell-Renznikoff Humanitarian Award from the Baton Rouge Council on Human Relations. Additionally, he was a grantee of the U.S. Department of Energy from 1976 to 2013. Dr. Haymaker attributes his success to his mentors Robert Kolenkow, Charles Schwartz, Richard Blankenbecler and Peter Carruthers. In addition to his scientific career, Dr. Haymaker is a devoted advocate to end racially-charged gun violence. DR.
