95 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine D r. C. Eugene “Gene” Jones Jr. received a BS from Ohio University in 1964 and a PhD in botany from Indiana University in 1969. Since 1999, he has been recognized as professor emeritus at California State University, Fullerton, and is renowned for his 30 years of teaching experience. He served Cal State Fullerton as the director of the Faye MacFadden Herbarium from 1969 to 2010, botany professor from 1977 to 2010 and biological science department chair from 1989 to 2004. Dr. Jones commenced his career in 1969 as an assistant professor of botany, turned associate professor of botany by 1972 at Cal State Fullerton, where he dedicated the entirety of his career. In 1970, it was brought to Dr. Jones’ attention that two faculty members and some students had started an organic garden on campus and were being challenged on it. Later on, Dr. Jones and those proud botanists brought the Fullerton Arboretum to fruition. For 10 years, Dr. Jones served as the founding director and designed the planting of the Fullerton Arboretum, which he calls the highlight of his career. His wife, Theresa, started what became known as the Friends of the Arboretum, which was a group of individuals from the city and surrounding cities that convinced the City of Fullerton to become involved with the arboretum and influence state policy. Named Distinguished Faculty Member by Cal State Fullerton’s School of Natural Science and Mathematics, Dr. Jones is the author of the 1980 work “A Dictionary of Botany” and was editor of the 1983 “Handbook of Experimental Pollination Biology.” Dr. Jones thanks Dr. Gamble, head of the botany department at Ohio University, and Dr. Charles Heiser, a professor at Indiana University, for developing him into the polished botanist he is today. Dr. Jones is a member of the American Institute of Biological Science, American Association for the Advancement of Science, Botanical Society of America, International Association of Plant Taxonomy, American Society of Plant Taxonomists, Society for the Study of Evolution, Ecological Society of America, California Botanical Society and Sigma Xi.
